Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ August 19, 2026
Florida's Gulf Coast remains environmentally favorable Wednesday, with minimal Gulf Coast red tide concerns and no tropical cyclone development expected anywhere in the Atlantic basin during the next seven days. Extreme heat remains today's biggest vacation consideration, with heat indices potentially reaching 109–112°F in parts of the coast.
Wednesday, August 19, 2026 · 9:00 AM ET
Gulf Coastal Conditions Overview
Wednesday brings another day when the environmental picture looks considerably better than the temperature feels.
Across west-central and southwest Florida, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 11:00 AM through 7:00 PM, with heat-index values potentially reaching 112°F.
The Panhandle remains extremely hot as well. Around 30A/Santa Rosa Beach, today's high is expected near 92°F with a heat index potentially reaching 109°F. A roughly 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms develops during the afternoon.
For families, this continues the vacation pattern we've been emphasizing all week:
The beach can be in excellent condition while the middle of the day is still uncomfortable—or potentially dangerous—for prolonged outdoor activity.
Family Takeaway
Make Wednesday another morning-focused beach day.
Enjoy the Gulf early, stay hydrated, use shade aggressively and keep afternoon plans flexible.
Red Tide Update
Gulf Coast
The latest Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission information continues to show a very favorable red tide picture for Florida's Gulf Coast.
During the latest monitoring period:
Karenia brevis was not observed in Southwest Florida.
Only one background-level Gulf-side detection was reported.
No widespread Gulf Coast bloom is indicated.
That remains encouraging for travelers visiting Clearwater Beach, Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Lido Key, Siesta Key, Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, Naples and Marco Island.
East Coast
The northeast Atlantic coast remains the portion of Florida receiving greater red tide attention following last week's elevated detections.
That situation remains geographically separate from RTG's five primary Gulf Coast vacation regions.
Family Takeaway
For Gulf Coast vacationers, red tide remains a low concern today.
The latest FWC information continues to support normal vacation planning across the overwhelming majority of RTG's Gulf Coast destinations.
Sargassum (Seaweed) Update
Gulf Coast Outlook
Sargassum continues to deserve monitoring, but it is not today's dominant Gulf Coast vacation issue.
USF's Sargassum Watch System continues near-real-time satellite monitoring across the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and Atlantic, helping track where offshore accumulations may eventually influence coastlines.
The important distinction for travelers is that offshore sargassum does not automatically mean every beach experiences heavy accumulation.
Winds, currents and shoreline orientation can produce major differences between destinations.
Florida Keys & Caribbean
Sargassum remains particularly relevant to the Florida Keys and Caribbean, which is why it remains one of the factors included in our RTG Vacation Watch.
Family Takeaway
For most of the five RTG Gulf Coast regions, heat remains substantially more important to today's vacation experience than seaweed.
Water Quality & Bacteria (Vibrio) Update
Florida's Healthy Beaches program continues routine bacterial monitoring of coastal swimming areas, with advisories issued through individual county health departments when samples exceed recreational-water standards.
That means water quality should continue to be treated as a beach-specific issue rather than assuming conditions are identical across Florida's entire coastline.
Warm coastal waters also mean naturally occurring Vibrio vulnificus remains an important seasonal consideration, particularly for people with open wounds or broken skin.
Family Takeaway
Normal swimming remains appropriate where beaches are open and no local advisory is posted.
Check local notices and avoid exposing open wounds to warm salt or brackish water.
Tropical Outlook
Today's tropical update is particularly encouraging.
As of early Wednesday morning, the National Hurricane Center reports:
Tropical cyclone formation is not expected anywhere in the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea or Gulf during the next seven days.
There are also no active tropical cyclones in the Atlantic at this time.
That's meaningful for families deciding whether an upcoming Florida vacation should be affected by tropical concerns.
We're approaching the historically busier portion of hurricane season, so RTG will continue checking conditions every morning.
But today the correct message isn't:
"There's something you need to worry about."
It's:
"The tropical Atlantic is unusually quiet from a Florida vacation-planning perspective right now."
Family Takeaway
There is currently no tropical reason to alter a Florida Gulf Coast vacation over the coming several days based on the National Hurricane Center's seven-day outlook.
Vacation Impact by RTG Region
🟡 Region 1 — Panhandle / Emerald Coast
Pensacola Beach, 30A, Destin and Panama City Beach remain attractive environmental choices, but heat continues to dominate vacation planning.
Around 30A, today's heat index could reach 109°F, with a chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
Vacation Strategy: Beach early, use midday for lunch or indoor activities, and check beach flags before swimming.
🟡 Region 2 — Clearwater & St. Pete
Red tide remains a low concern, while extreme heat remains much more relevant to the actual beach experience.
West-central Florida could see heat-index values approaching 112°F today.
Vacation Strategy: Favor the morning and avoid prolonged midday sun exposure.
🟡 Region 3 — Anna Maria Island
Anna Maria Island, Holmes Beach, Bradenton Beach and Coquina Beach continue benefiting from the favorable Gulf Coast environmental picture.
Again, heat is the primary factor families need to plan around.
Vacation Strategy: Make the morning your main beach window and keep plenty of water available.
🟡 Region 4 — Sarasota Barrier Islands
Longboat Key, Lido Key and Siesta Key remain strong environmental choices, particularly with the latest FWC information continuing to show no K. brevis observations in Southwest Florida.
Vacation Strategy: Excellent beach options, especially early in the day. Heat remains the main limitation.
🟡 Region 5 — Southwest Florida
Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, Naples and Marco Island continue benefiting from the latest favorable Southwest Florida red tide picture.
Vacation Strategy: Morning beach time remains preferable, with shade and hydration increasingly important toward midday.
🌴 RTG Vacation Watch
Florida Keys & Key West
Key West looks particularly attractive from a marine-conditions standpoint today.
The National Weather Service expects:
Mostly sunny skies
Highs in the lower 90s
Light west-to-northwest winds
Florida Bay/Gulfside seas 1 foot or less
Hawk Channel seas around 1 foot or less
Florida Straits seas 1 foot or less
Smooth to light-chop nearshore waters
And the broader tropical outlook is equally encouraging: no tropical cyclone development is expected in the Atlantic basin during the next seven days.
Current Status: 🟢 Favorable
For Key West travelers, heat and strong August sunshine are much more relevant today than tropical weather or rough marine conditions.
What May Change Next
Heat remains the biggest near-term story.
And there's an interesting warning for 30A travelers tomorrow.
The current Santa Rosa Beach forecast calls for Thursday's temperature to reach about 94°F with a heat index potentially reaching 114°F.
So while environmental conditions remain favorable, Thursday could become an even more challenging heat day in portions of the Panhandle.
RTG will continue monitoring:
Daily FWC red tide sampling
Tropical development
Extreme heat
Rip-current conditions
Beach flags
Afternoon thunderstorms
Water-quality advisories
Sargassum movement
Florida Keys conditions
The tropical side of that list is unusually reassuring today: NHC currently expects no Atlantic tropical cyclone formation through the next seven days.
What This Means for Families
This week is giving us a surprisingly useful lesson in beach-vacation planning.
Most people think the question is:
"Is this a good beach right now?"
But that's often too simplistic.
Wednesday's better question is:
"When is this beach at its best today?"
Take 30A.
Red tide isn't the concern.
There's no tropical threat.
The beach itself may look spectacular.
But a heat index approaching 109°F changes how a family should structure the day.
So instead of deciding:
Beach or no beach?
RTG's guidance becomes:
Beach early.
Lunch during peak heat.
Indoor or shaded activity during the hottest hours.
Reassess later in the afternoon.
Same vacation.
Same destination.
Better decision.
And that's increasingly the difference between simply reporting environmental conditions and providing vacation intelligence.
Best Beaches Right Now
🥇 Sanibel Island — Southwest Florida continues to show an excellent red tide picture, with no K. brevis observed during the latest monitoring period.
🥈 Siesta Key — Favorable red tide conditions and no tropical threat keep Siesta Key among today's strongest overall choices. Extreme heat remains the primary reason to favor the morning.
🥉 Key West — A special Vacation Watch pick today: mostly sunny weather, very light winds, seas around 1 foot or less across much of the surrounding waters and no tropical development expected across the Atlantic basin.

Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ August 18, 2026
Tuesday keeps Florida's Gulf Coast in a favorable environmental pattern, with minimal Gulf Coast red tide concerns and no immediate tropical threat. Heat remains the biggest vacation factor, while scattered showers and thunderstorms begin returning to parts of west-central and southwest Florida.
Tuesday, August 18, 2026 · 9:00 AM ET
Gulf Coastal Conditions Overview
Tuesday continues the unusual pattern we've been watching for several days:
The beaches themselves remain environmentally favorable, while the atmosphere is making vacation planning more complicated.
High pressure and mostly sunny skies will keep conditions very hot across west-central and southwest Florida, with the National Weather Service expecting heat-index values to climb above 108°F Tuesday and Wednesday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms should also become more common as the day progresses.
Around 30A and Destin, hot and humid conditions also continue, so families should again prioritize the cooler morning hours and check local beach flags before entering the Gulf.
Family Takeaway
Tuesday remains a good beach day across much of Florida's Gulf Coast—but it's another day when timing matters almost as much as destination.
Morning: beach.
Midday: shade, lunch or indoor activities.
Afternoon: watch the radar and reassess.
Red Tide Update
Gulf Coast
The latest FWC statewide report remains excellent news for Gulf Coast vacationers.
During the most recent monitoring week:
Karenia brevis was not observed in Southwest Florida.
Only one background-level Gulf-side sample was reported.
No suspected red-tide-related fish kills were reported.
No respiratory irritation suspected to be associated with red tide was reported.
FWC defines background concentrations as 1,000 cells per liter or less, a level at which no effects are anticipated.
That leaves Clearwater, Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Lido Key, Siesta Key, Sanibel, Captiva, Naples and Marco Island in an encouraging position from a red-tide perspective.
East Coast
Florida's northeast Atlantic coast remains the area to watch.
FWC found K. brevis in 20 East Coast samples, including bloom-level concentrations in two Duval County samples. Additional very-low to medium concentrations were detected in Nassau, Duval and St. Johns counties.
Those conditions remain geographically separate from RTG's five Gulf Coast vacation regions.
Family Takeaway
For Gulf Coast families, red tide remains near the bottom of today's vacation-concern list.
That's exactly where we want it.
Sargassum (Seaweed) Update
Gulf Coast Outlook
Sargassum remains something worth monitoring even though it isn't dominating today's Gulf Coast vacation picture.
University of South Florida satellite monitoring shows that 2026 has been a particularly significant sargassum year across the broader Gulf and Caribbean. USF reported that the total amount in the Gulf reached about 5 million metric tons in June, nearly twice the historical record for that period.
That does not mean every Gulf Coast beach is covered in seaweed. Beaching is highly dependent on winds, currents and shoreline orientation.
Localized accumulations can therefore differ dramatically from one destination—or even one beach—to another.
Florida Keys & Caribbean
Sargassum remains especially relevant to the Caribbean, southeast Florida and portions of the Florida Keys. USF notes that major beaching events have occurred in the Caribbean and southeast Florida during this unusually active season.
Family Takeaway
Sargassum deserves continued monitoring, but there is no reason to treat the entire Florida Gulf Coast as having the same seaweed conditions.
Water Quality & Bacteria (Vibrio) Update
Water quality remains a local rather than Gulf-wide issue, which is why checking individual advisories matters.
One encouraging example from the Panhandle: the Florida Department of Health recently lifted bacterial water-quality advisories at Beach Drive and Earl Gilbert Park in Bay County after follow-up testing returned to acceptable levels.
Warm Gulf waters also continue to support naturally occurring Vibrio, making normal summertime precautions important.
Family Takeaway
Swimming remains appropriate where beaches are open and no local advisory is posted.
Avoid entering warm salt or brackish water with open wounds, and check local beach notices before swimming.
Tropical Outlook
We're now entering the period of August when RTG's tropical monitoring becomes increasingly important.
The National Hurricane Center continues routine monitoring of the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and Gulf.
The important vacation-planning message for Tuesday remains:
There is no immediate tropical cyclone threatening Florida's Gulf Coast.
That distinction matters.
Seeing tropical disturbances on a weather map in August is normal.
What matters to a family planning a vacation is whether one has a realistic chance of affecting their destination during their travel dates.
At the moment, there is no reason for Gulf Coast travelers to change plans because of a tropical cyclone.
Family Takeaway
Keep watching the tropics—but don't let routine August tropical activity create unnecessary vacation anxiety.
Vacation Impact by RTG Region
🟡 Region 1 — Panhandle / Emerald Coast
Pensacola Beach, 30A, Destin and Panama City Beach remain attractive environmental choices.
Heat remains the major comfort consideration, and local rip-current conditions should always be checked before swimming.
Vacation Strategy: Get your longest beach session in during the morning and use local beach flags as your swimming guide.
🟡 Region 2 — Clearwater & St. Pete
Clearwater and St. Pete continue benefiting from favorable red tide conditions, but heat-index values across west-central Florida are again expected to exceed 108°F. Scattered showers and thunderstorms also begin becoming more likely.
Vacation Strategy: Favor morning beach time and keep afternoon plans flexible.
🟡 Region 3 — Anna Maria Island
Anna Maria Island, Holmes Beach, Bradenton Beach and Coquina Beach remain environmentally favorable.
Heat and developing afternoon storms are more relevant today than red tide.
Vacation Strategy: Beach early, take a midday break, then check radar before returning.
🟡 Region 4 — Sarasota Barrier Islands
Longboat Key, Lido Key and Siesta Key remain among the strongest environmental choices.
The latest FWC report found no K. brevis in Southwest Florida, but extreme heat continues across the region.
Vacation Strategy: Excellent morning beach potential. Hydration and shade remain essential.
🟡 Region 5 — Southwest Florida
Sanibel, Captiva, Naples and Marco Island continue benefiting from very favorable red tide conditions.
Again, FWC found no K. brevis in Southwest Florida during the latest monitoring week.
Vacation Strategy: Favor morning activities and expect the possibility of afternoon showers or thunderstorms.
🌴 RTG Vacation Watch
Florida Keys & Key West
Key West starts Tuesday in a relatively quiet weather pattern.
The National Weather Service expects dry and warm conditions, with winds becoming light and variable before turning west-to-northwest around 5–10 mph. Importantly, there are currently no watches, warnings or advisories posted for the Keys.
That is a notable improvement from some of the heat and coastal-flood concerns we've monitored recently.
RTG continues watching:
Tropical development
Sargassum
Marine conditions
Water quality
Coastal flooding
Heat
Other vacation-impacting conditions
Current Status: 🟢 Favorable
For Key West travelers, Tuesday currently looks like a day when heat and sunshine matter more than any major environmental threat.
What May Change Next
We're starting to see the weather pattern evolve.
High pressure will continue producing very hot conditions through the first half of the week, but scattered showers and thunderstorms are beginning to return across west-central and southwest Florida.
That means the vacation strategy we've used for the past several days may gradually change from:
"Avoid the heat."
to:
"Avoid the heat—and watch the afternoon radar."
RTG will continue monitoring:
Daily FWC red tide sampling
Atlantic tropical development
Rip-current conditions
Beach flags
Extreme heat
Afternoon thunderstorms
Water-quality advisories
Sargassum movement
Florida Keys conditions
The next full FWC statewide red tide report is scheduled for Friday, August 21.
What This Means for Families
Today's Outlook highlights something we've been seeing repeatedly this week.
Choosing the right beach is only half the decision.
Choosing the right time to use that beach can matter just as much.
A family staying on Siesta Key, for example, may have:
Minimal red tide concern.
Warm Gulf water.
A beautiful beach.
No major tropical threat.
Yet spending six straight hours in afternoon heat with a heat index above 108°F isn't necessarily the best way to experience it.
The better vacation decision might be:
8:30 AM – Beach
11:30 AM – Lunch
1:00 PM – Pool, shopping, aquarium or indoor activity
4:00 PM – Check radar
5:00 PM – Sunset beach return if conditions cooperate
Same destination.
Same vacation.
Better use of the conditions.
That's increasingly what the Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ should help families accomplish.
Best Beaches Right Now
🥇 Sanibel Island — No K. brevis was detected in Southwest Florida during the latest FWC monitoring week, keeping Sanibel among today's strongest environmental choices.
🥈 Siesta Key — Favorable red tide conditions and an excellent beach environment remain in place. Heat is the primary reason to make this a morning-focused beach day.
🥉 30A — The Emerald Coast remains a strong vacation choice, especially for travelers who take advantage of the morning hours and follow local beach-flag guidance.

Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ August 17, 2026
Florida's Gulf Coast starts the week with an unusual combination: very favorable environmental and swimming conditions, but potentially dangerous heat. Red tide remains minimal, surf is 1 foot or less across many central and southwest beaches, and there is no immediate tropical threat—but heat indices could reach 110–113°F in parts of the coast today.
Monday, August 17, 2026 · 9:00 AM ET
Gulf Coastal Conditions Overview
Monday begins with another encouraging environmental picture across Florida's Gulf Coast.
For Clearwater Beach, St. Pete Beach, Bradenton Beach, Longboat Key and Siesta Key, the National Weather Service forecasts sunny skies, surf of 1 foot or less, low rip-current risk and Gulf water temperatures in the upper 80s. Sanibel and Captiva have a similarly favorable setup, with sunny conditions, low rip-current risk and surf of 1 foot or less.
The catch is the heat.
A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11:00 AM until 7:00 PM across all of west-central and southwest Florida, with heat-index values potentially reaching 110°F.
And farther north, the Emerald Coast is even hotter: the Destin/Miramar Beach area is under an Extreme Heat Warning, with today's heat index potentially reaching 113°F.
Family Takeaway
Today's beaches may look beautiful—and many genuinely have excellent swimming conditions—but don't let calm water disguise the heat risk.
Morning beach time remains the smartest choice.
Red Tide Update
Gulf Coast
The latest Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report continues to provide very encouraging news for Gulf Coast travelers.
During the most recent monitoring week:
Karenia brevis was not observed in Southwest Florida.
Only one background-level sample was detected on Florida's Gulf side.
That sample was reported in the northwest portion of the state.
No widespread Gulf Coast bloom is indicated.
For families visiting Clearwater, Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Lido Key, Siesta Key, Sanibel, Captiva, Naples and Marco Island, red tide remains a very low vacation concern.
East Coast
Florida's Atlantic Coast remains the area worth watching.
FWC reported K. brevis in 20 East Coast samples, including bloom concentrations above 100,000 cells per liter in two Duval County samples—the first bloom-level concentrations there this season.
Those conditions remain geographically separate from RTG's primary Gulf Coast vacation destinations.
Family Takeaway
For Florida Gulf Coast travelers, red tide is not today's major vacation issue.
That's especially encouraging in Southwest Florida, where FWC reported no K. brevis detections during the latest monitoring week.
Sargassum (Seaweed) Update
Gulf Coast Outlook
Sargassum remains a secondary concern across most of Florida's Gulf Coast today.
Localized patches can always move ashore as winds and currents change, but there is no indication of a coast-wide Gulf sargassum event that should alter vacation plans.
Florida Keys & Caribbean
Sargassum remains more relevant farther south, particularly around portions of the Florida Keys and Caribbean.
Conditions can differ substantially from one Keys shoreline to another, which is why RTG continues treating Key West separately through RTG Vacation Watch.
Family Takeaway
For most of RTG's five primary Gulf Coast regions, seaweed remains well behind heat as today's vacation-planning concern.
Water Quality & Bacteria (Vibrio) Update
Warm Gulf waters continue to make naturally occurring Vibrio vulnificus a normal summertime consideration.
The Florida Department of Health notes that Vibrio vulnificus naturally occurs in warm brackish seawater and that open wounds can become exposed through direct contact with coastal water.
Family Takeaway
Swimming remains appropriate where beaches are open and no local advisory is posted.
Avoid exposing open cuts or wounds to warm salt or brackish water and continue checking local notices before swimming.
Tropical Outlook
The National Hurricane Center continues routine monitoring of the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf as we move deeper into August. Its 2:00 AM Monday Tropical Weather Outlook was issued for the North Atlantic basin early this morning.
For Florida vacation planning, the important message remains:
There is no immediate tropical cyclone requiring Gulf Coast travelers to change vacation plans today.
We're now entering the part of August when tropical monitoring becomes increasingly important, however, so RTG will continue watching developing disturbances daily rather than waiting until a system approaches Florida.
Family Takeaway
The tropics deserve attention, not alarm today.
Vacation Impact by RTG Region
🟠 Region 1 — Panhandle / Emerald Coast
Pensacola Beach, 30A, Destin and Panama City Beach remain attractive environmentally, but extreme heat makes this today's region requiring the most planning.
The Destin/Miramar Beach area is under an Extreme Heat Warning, with temperatures near 92°F but heat-index values potentially reaching 113°F. Rain chances are only around 20%, meaning there may be relatively little cooling relief.
NWS Mobile/Pensacola also highlights continuing hot and humid conditions and cumulative heat stress entering the workweek.
Vacation Strategy: Beach early. Plan lunch or indoor activities during peak heat. Check local beach flags before entering the Gulf.
🟡 Region 2 — Clearwater & St. Pete
This is an interesting combination today.
Clearwater and St. Pete have sunny skies, low rip-current risk, surf of 1 foot or less and upper-80s Gulf water—excellent beach conditions.
But the region is also under a Heat Advisory with heat-index values potentially reaching 110°F.
Vacation Strategy: Excellent morning beach opportunity; reduce prolonged midday sun exposure.
🟡 Region 3 — Anna Maria Island
Bradenton Beach and the Anna Maria Island area share today's favorable surf setup: low rip-current risk, 1-foot-or-less surf and sunny skies.
Heat is again the primary drawback.
Vacation Strategy: Take advantage of the excellent water conditions early.
🟡 Region 4 — Sarasota Barrier Islands
Longboat Key, Lido Key and Siesta Key have one of today's strongest environmental setups.
NWS forecasts sunny skies, low rip-current risk, surf of 1 foot or less and no thunderstorm potential for the Sarasota barrier-island beach zone today.
Vacation Strategy: Excellent beach conditions, but today's Heat Advisory still warrants shade, hydration and midday breaks.
🟡 Region 5 — Southwest Florida
Sanibel and Captiva also look particularly favorable from a beach-condition standpoint: sunny skies, low rip-current risk, surf of 1 foot or less and Gulf temperatures in the upper 80s.
The latest FWC report also found no K. brevis in Southwest Florida.
Vacation Strategy: An excellent environmental setup—just don't underestimate the heat.
🌴 RTG Vacation Watch
Florida Keys & Key West
The Saharan Air Layer continues influencing the Florida Keys today, contributing to a relatively dry, warm pattern. NWS Key West expects mostly sunny skies, highs near 90°F and light east-to-southeast winds.
Marine conditions are also relatively calm:
Bayside/Gulfside seas around 1 foot
Hawk Channel around 1–2 feet
Florida Straits generally 2–3 feet, subsiding toward 2 feet
Smooth to light-chop nearshore conditions
A Heat Advisory remains posted for the area.
Current Status: 🟡 Heat Awareness / Favorable Marine Conditions
For Key West travelers, this is another day when red tide isn't the story at all.
Heat, sunshine, marine conditions and broader tropical monitoring matter much more.
What May Change Next
There's an interesting change coming tomorrow.
For Clearwater, St. Pete, Bradenton Beach, Longboat Key and Siesta Key, the NWS currently expects the rip-current risk to increase from low today to moderate Tuesday, with surf increasing to around 1–2 feet.
Rain chances should also gradually return closer to normal across west-central and southwest Florida by midweek as atmospheric moisture increases.
RTG will continue monitoring:
Daily red tide sampling
Atlantic tropical development
Rip-current conditions
Beach flags
Extreme heat
Water-quality advisories
Sargassum movement
Florida Keys conditions
So while Monday's water conditions are particularly favorable, Tuesday may look slightly different.
What This Means for Families
Today is another excellent example of why a beach can be environmentally excellent without being a perfect all-day beach day.
Consider Sarasota's barrier islands:
Red tide?
Very low concern.
Surf?
1 foot or less.
Rip-current risk?
Low.
Thunderstorms?
None expected in today's surf-zone forecast.
Water temperature?
Upper 80s.
On paper, that's about as attractive as an August Gulf Coast beach setup gets.
But add a heat index approaching 110°F, and the vacation decision changes.
The answer isn't:
"Don't go."
It's:
"This is a fantastic morning beach day."
That's the distinction RTG should continue making.
We're not simply trying to identify the beach with the fewest environmental problems.
We're trying to help families understand how to get the best experience from the beach they choose.
Best Beaches Right Now
🥇 Siesta Key — Sunny skies, low rip-current risk, surf of 1 foot or less, no thunderstorm potential and favorable red tide conditions make Siesta Key one of today's strongest choices—especially this morning.
🥈 Sanibel Island — No K. brevis was detected in Southwest Florida in the latest FWC report, while Sanibel has low rip-current risk, sunny skies and surf of 1 foot or less today.
🥉 Longboat Key — Another excellent environmental setup with sunny skies, calm surf and low rip-current risk. The Heat Advisory is the primary reason to favor morning beach time.

Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ August 16, 2026
Sunday brings another favorable environmental outlook across Florida's Gulf Coast, with minimal red tide concerns and no immediate tropical threat. But dangerous heat remains today's biggest vacation consideration, with heat indices reaching 108–112°F across parts of the coast.
Sunday, August 16, 2026 · 9:00 AM ET
Gulf Coastal Conditions Overview
Sunday begins with another encouraging environmental picture across Florida's Gulf Coast—but extreme heat remains the factor families are most likely to notice today.
The National Weather Service has a Heat Advisory in effect from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM across all of west-central and southwest Florida, with heat index values expected to reach approximately 108–112°F. Mostly sunny conditions are expected, with only isolated afternoon showers or thunderstorms.
The Panhandle isn't escaping the heat either. Around 30A/Santa Rosa Beach, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM CDT. Temperatures should reach around 92°F, with the heat index potentially reaching 109°F and a roughly 30% chance of afternoon showers or thunderstorms.
For families, that makes the morning hours particularly valuable today.
Family Takeaway
The beach itself remains inviting across much of Florida's Gulf Coast.
The smartest strategy today is:
Beach early. Hydrate constantly. Find shade. Take the midday heat seriously.
Red Tide Update
Gulf Coast
Friday's latest Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report continues to provide excellent news for Gulf Coast vacationers.
During the most recent monitoring week:
Karenia brevis was not observed in Southwest Florida.
Only one background-level sample was detected on Florida's Gulf side.
No suspected red-tide-related fish kills were reported.
No respiratory irritation associated with red tide was reported.
FWC also forecasts a net southward movement of surface and subsurface waters from Pinellas County toward northern Monroe County over the short term.
For destinations including Clearwater Beach, Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Sanibel, Captiva, Naples, and Marco Island, red tide remains a very low vacation concern today.
East Coast
Florida's Atlantic Coast remains a different story.
FWC detected K. brevis in 20 East Coast samples, including the first bloom-level concentrations of the season in two Duval County samples. Additional very-low to medium concentrations were detected in portions of Nassau, Duval, and St. Johns counties.
Those conditions are geographically separate from RTG's Gulf Coast vacation regions.
Family Takeaway
For Gulf Coast travelers, the latest red tide report remains strongly favorable.
Red tide is simply not one of the primary factors families need to plan around today.
Sargassum (Seaweed) Update
Gulf Coast Outlook
Sargassum remains a secondary concern for most Florida Gulf Coast destinations.
Localized seaweed can always arrive on individual beaches depending on wind and currents, but there is no indication this morning of a widespread Gulf Coast sargassum event that should alter vacation plans.
Florida Keys & Caribbean
Sargassum remains more relevant farther south, particularly around portions of the Florida Keys and Caribbean.
Beach-to-beach conditions can vary significantly, which is why RTG continues treating the Keys separately through RTG Vacation Watch rather than assuming central Gulf Coast conditions apply there.
Family Takeaway
For most of RTG's five Gulf Coast regions, seaweed is not today's major vacation issue.
Water Quality & Bacteria (Vibrio) Update
Florida's Healthy Beaches program continues routine monitoring of coastal swimming areas for fecal indicator bacteria, with local advisories issued when testing exceeds health guidelines.
Warm Gulf waters also continue to make naturally occurring Vibrio vulnificus a normal summertime consideration. Florida health officials recommend keeping open wounds and broken skin out of warm salt or brackish water.
Family Takeaway
Normal beach and swimming activities remain appropriate where beaches are open and no local advisory is posted.
Check local notices and avoid entering Gulf water with open cuts or wounds.
Tropical Outlook
As we move deeper into August, RTG continues checking the Atlantic every morning.
The National Hurricane Center's 2:00 AM Sunday Tropical Weather Outlook continues monitoring the North Atlantic basin.
The important vacation-planning message this morning remains:
There is no immediate tropical cyclone threat requiring Florida Gulf Coast families to change their vacation plans.
That doesn't mean tropical monitoring becomes less important.
Quite the opposite.
We're approaching the climatologically more active portion of hurricane season, so RTG will continue watching developing disturbances early—before they become relevant to travelers.
Family Takeaway
Tropical activity deserves monitoring, but it does not currently warrant changes to Florida Gulf Coast vacation plans.
Vacation Impact by RTG Region
🟡 Region 1 — Panhandle / Emerald Coast
Pensacola Beach, 30A, Destin, and Panama City Beach remain attractive choices today.
Around 30A, the heat index could reach 109°F, with afternoon shower or thunderstorm chances around 30%.
Vacation Strategy: Make morning your primary beach window and check local beach flags before swimming.
🟡 Region 2 — Clearwater & St. Pete
Red tide remains a low concern, but extreme heat dominates today's planning picture.
Heat index values across west-central Florida may reach 108–112°F.
Vacation Strategy: Morning swimming followed by an indoor or shaded afternoon break makes sense today.
🟡 Region 3 — Anna Maria Island
Anna Maria Island, Holmes Beach, Bradenton Beach, and Coquina Beach continue offering favorable environmental conditions.
Again, the main issue isn't red tide or seaweed.
It's heat.
Vacation Strategy: Get your longest stretch of beach time in before midday.
🟡 Region 4 — Sarasota Barrier Islands
Longboat Key, Lido Key, and Siesta Key continue offering some of Florida's strongest environmental conditions.
FWC reported no K. brevis detections in Southwest Florida during the latest monitoring week, while Sarasota-area weather remains hot and humid.
Vacation Strategy: Excellent beach choices—just treat the midday heat seriously.
🟡 Region 5 — Southwest Florida
Sanibel, Captiva, Naples, and Marco Island continue benefiting from the latest favorable red tide report, with no K. brevis detected in Southwest Florida during the past week.
Extreme heat remains today's main comfort concern.
Vacation Strategy: Early beach time, plenty of hydration, and shade during peak afternoon heat.
🌴 RTG Vacation Watch
Florida Keys & Key West
Today brings an interesting change in the Keys.
A Saharan Air Layer (SAL) has moved across southern Florida and the Florida Keys, producing relatively sparse cloud cover. The National Weather Service expects below-normal shower coverage, with the Saharan air gradually washing out around midweek.
Key West is expected to see:
Mostly sunny skies
Highs in the lower 90s
East winds near 10 mph
Bayside/Gulfside seas around 1–2 feet
Florida Straits seas generally around 2–3 feet
At 6:00 AM, Key West was already around 85°F with a heat index near 94°F.
A Heat Advisory is also in effect for the Keys.
Current Status: 🟡 Heat Awareness
The good news is that reduced shower coverage should create more usable outdoor time today.
The tradeoff?
More sunshine + fewer cooling showers = heat becomes even more important.
This is another example of why Key West fits naturally into RTG's broader vacation intelligence coverage.
What May Change Next
Today we're watching several things heading into the new week.
Heat remains #1.
The extreme-heat pattern isn't disappearing tomorrow. West-central and southwest Florida are expected to remain hot Monday, while 30A could see heat index values climb as high as 112°F.
RTG will also continue monitoring:
Daily FWC red tide sampling
Atlantic tropical disturbances
Rip-current conditions
Beach flags
Water-quality advisories
Sargassum movement
Afternoon thunderstorms
Florida Keys conditions
The next full FWC statewide red tide report is scheduled for Friday, August 21, although the agency's sampling map continues updating daily.
What This Means for Families
This weekend has demonstrated something important about the direction RTG is taking.
If we were still simply a red tide website, today's report would basically say:
"Red tide looks good."
And then we'd be finished.
But that's not the most useful information for someone actually standing on a Florida beach today.
The thing most likely to affect your family's experience is extreme heat.
Red tide is minimal.
There is no immediate tropical threat.
There is no widespread Gulf Coast seaweed event dominating the picture.
Yet heat index values approaching 110°F or higher could absolutely change how enjoyable a six-hour afternoon beach day feels.
That's why today's vacation guidance isn't:
Don't go to the beach.
It's:
Go—but use the beach differently.
Enjoy the morning.
Get lunch during peak heat.
Find shade.
Drink plenty of water.
Then reconsider the beach later in the afternoon as conditions allow.
That's the kind of practical decision RTG should help families make.
Best Beaches Right Now
🥇 Longboat Key — Favorable red tide conditions and an excellent overall beach environment keep Longboat Key near the top today. The primary drawback is extreme afternoon heat.
🥈 Sanibel Island — No K. brevis was detected in Southwest Florida during FWC's latest monitoring week, making Sanibel an excellent environmental choice for an early beach day.
🥉 30A — 30A remains one of the Panhandle's premier vacation choices, but today's potential 109°F heat index makes early beach time particularly important.

Planning a Florida Gulf Coast Vacation?
Start here.
The Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ is RTG's free daily overview of beach conditions, red tide, water quality, seaweed activity, tropical weather, and other coastal factors that may impact your vacation.
Gulf Coastal Conditions Overview
Florida's Gulf Coast continues enjoying one of its best stretches of summer beach weather. From Pensacola Beach and 30A through Marco Island, beach conditions remain favorable with warm Gulf waters, light morning winds, and only the usual chance of scattered afternoon thunderstorms.
As we've seen throughout much of early August, environmental conditions continue taking a back seat to typical summer weather. For most families, the biggest decision today is simply which beach to visit.
Red Tide Update
Gulf Coast
Florida's latest statewide monitoring continues to show excellent overall red tide conditions.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's latest report indicates:
Background concentrations of Karenia brevis remain limited to a handful of Gulf Coast samples.
No fish kills related to red tide have been reported.
No respiratory irritation associated with red tide has been reported along Florida's Gulf Coast.
Red tide continues to remain at background levels in monitored Gulf Coast areas.
Popular destinations including:
Pensacola Beach
30A
Destin
Clearwater Beach
Anna Maria Island
Longboat Key
Lido Key
Siesta Key
Sanibel Island
Captiva Island
Naples
Marco Island
continue offering favorable vacation conditions.
East Coast
Low-level detections continue in portions of Northeast Florida, but they are not affecting Florida Gulf Coast vacation destinations.
Family Takeaway
Red tide continues to have little to no impact on Florida Gulf Coast beach vacations. Current monitoring does not indicate conditions that should alter travel plans for most visitors.
Sargassum (Seaweed) Update
Gulf Coast Outlook
Seaweed activity remains relatively light across most Florida Gulf Coast beaches. While isolated patches may arrive because of changing winds and currents, widespread accumulations are not expected today.
East Coast, Caribbean & Florida Keys
Higher concentrations continue across portions of the Caribbean and Atlantic. Visitors traveling to the Florida Keys may encounter localized seaweed depending on daily wind patterns.
Health Considerations
Large accumulations of decomposing seaweed can occasionally produce unpleasant odors and temporary respiratory irritation for sensitive individuals.
Family Takeaway
Seaweed remains a relatively minor factor for most Florida Gulf Coast vacation plans today.
Water Quality & Bacteria (Vibrio) Update
Water quality remains generally favorable throughout much of Florida's Gulf Coast.
Warm Gulf water temperatures continue supporting naturally occurring Vibrio bacteria, which remain a normal seasonal consideration during August.
Family Takeaway
Swimming, boating, paddleboarding, fishing, and shelling remain appropriate where beaches are open. Continue using normal summer precautions by avoiding Gulf water with open cuts or wounds and rinsing off after swimming.
Tropical Outlook
The Atlantic remains active enough to keep forecasters watching several tropical waves, but Florida's Gulf Coast continues benefiting from a quiet tropical pattern.
One thing worth remembering this time of year:
Not every tropical wave becomes a tropical storm, and not every tropical storm affects Florida.
That's why RTG follows systems from the moment they develop—so families know which ones matter and which ones simply become part of the background during hurricane season.
For today, no tropical systems are expected to impact Florida Gulf Coast vacations.

Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ August 11, 2026

Planning a Florida Gulf Coast Vacation?
Start here.
The Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ is RTG's free daily overview of beach conditions, red tide, water quality, seaweed activity, tropical weather, and other coastal factors that may impact your vacation.
Gulf Coastal Conditions Overview
Another favorable day is expected across much of Florida's Gulf Coast as warm Gulf waters, light morning winds, and scattered afternoon thunderstorms continue the typical August pattern. From Pensacola Beach and 30A south to Marco Island, environmental conditions remain supportive of beach vacations.
For families beginning vacations this week, mornings continue to provide the best opportunities for swimming, paddleboarding, shelling, and other beach activities before afternoon thunderstorms become more common.
Red Tide Update
Gulf Coast
Florida's latest monitoring continues to indicate excellent overall red tide conditions across Florida's Gulf Coast.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission:
Background concentrations of Karenia brevis remain limited to one offshore sample from Sarasota County.
No red tide has been detected in Northwest Florida.
No red tide-related fish kills have been reported.
No respiratory irritation associated with red tide has been reported anywhere along Florida's Gulf Coast.
Popular destinations including:
Pensacola Beach
30A
Destin
Clearwater Beach
Anna Maria Island
Longboat Key
Lido Key
Siesta Key
Sanibel Island
Captiva Island
Naples
Marco Island
continue experiencing favorable environmental conditions.
East Coast
No significant red tide impacts are currently affecting Florida's Atlantic Coast.
Family Takeaway
Current monitoring indicates that red tide continues to have little to no impact on Florida Gulf Coast beach vacations, allowing most families to focus on choosing the destination that best fits their trip.
Sargassum (Seaweed) Update
Gulf Coast Outlook
Sargassum remains limited across most Florida Gulf Coast beaches. Small, localized patches may occasionally wash ashore depending on winds and currents, but widespread accumulations are not expected.
East Coast, Caribbean & Florida Keys
Higher concentrations of seaweed continue across portions of the Caribbean and Atlantic. Visitors traveling to the Florida Keys may notice occasional localized accumulations, though conditions can change quickly with shifting winds.
Health Considerations
Large accumulations of decomposing seaweed can occasionally create unpleasant odors and temporary respiratory irritation for sensitive individuals.
Family Takeaway
Seaweed remains a relatively minor consideration for most Florida Gulf Coast vacations today.
Water Quality & Bacteria (Vibrio) Update
Water quality remains generally favorable throughout much of Florida's Gulf Coast.
Warm Gulf water temperatures continue supporting naturally occurring Vibrio bacteria, which remain a normal seasonal consideration during August.
Family Takeaway
Swimming, boating, paddleboarding, fishing, and shelling remain appropriate where beaches are open. Continue using normal summer precautions by avoiding Gulf water with open cuts or wounds and rinsing off after swimming.
Tropical Outlook
RTG continues monitoring tropical waves moving across the Atlantic, but none are expected to affect Florida vacation plans this week. This is an important distinction.
During August, it's common to see tropical waves emerge from Africa. Most never become a threat to Florida, and today's outlook remains favorable across the Gulf Coast.
Rather than reacting to every tropical headline, RTG focuses on one question:
"Will this affect my Florida beach vacation?"
Today, the answer remains no. Tropical monitoring continues, but there are no immediate threats to Florida's Gulf Coast vacation outlook.
Vacation Impact by RTG Region
🟢 Region 1 — Panhandle / Emerald Coast
Pensacola Beach, 30A, Destin, and Panama City Beach continue experiencing excellent beach conditions. Morning hours should provide the best overall beach experience.
🟢 Region 2 — Clearwater & St. Pete

• afternoon thunderstorms
• nearshore currents
• localized water quality advisories
Today RTG is monitoring:
Florida's next red tide sampling
Water quality advisories
Sargassum movement
Rip current forecasts
Atlantic tropical waves
Any new tropical development
As we move deeper into August, tropical monitoring becomes increasingly important, even during quieter periods. RTG will continue separating meaningful developments from routine tropical activity.
What This Means for Families
Today's Outlook reinforces a trend we've seen throughout early August:
Florida's Gulf Coast continues offering excellent vacation conditions across a wide variety of destinations.
While there are always environmental factors worth monitoring, none currently suggest families should postpone or significantly alter their vacation plans.
Instead, today's focus shifts back to what RTG does best:
Helping families choose which beach offers the experience they're looking for.

Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ August 10, 2026
A new week begins with another encouraging outlook for Florida Gulf Coast travelers. Today's briefing covers the latest red tide monitoring, tropical outlook, seaweed conditions, water quality, and highlights the destinations offering the strongest overall beach experience.
Monday, August 10, 2026 · 9:00 AM ET
Gulf Coastal Conditions Overview
Florida's Gulf Coast begins another August week with generally favorable vacation conditions across most of the coastline. From Pensacola Beach and 30A through Marco Island, visitors should find warm Gulf waters, light morning winds, and the familiar pattern of scattered afternoon thunderstorms.
For travelers beginning a week-long vacation, today's conditions continue a trend we've seen throughout early August: environmental concerns remain limited while typical summer weather remains the primary planning consideration.
Red Tide Update
Gulf Coast
Florida's latest statewide monitoring continues to show excellent overall red tide conditions across Florida's Gulf Coast.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission:
Background concentrations of Karenia brevis remain limited to one offshore sample from Sarasota County.
No red tide was detected in Northwest Florida.
No red tide-related fish kills have been reported.
No respiratory irritation associated with red tide has been reported along Florida's Gulf Coast.
Popular destinations including:
Pensacola Beach
30A
Destin
Clearwater Beach
Anna Maria Island
Longboat Key
Lido Key
Siesta Key
Sanibel Island
Captiva Island
Naples
Marco Island
continue experiencing favorable environmental conditions.
East Coast
No significant red tide impacts are currently affecting Florida's Atlantic Coast.
Family Takeaway
Red tide continues to have little to no influence on vacation planning across Florida's Gulf Coast. Current monitoring indicates that beachgoers should experience normal summer conditions at most destinations.
Sargassum (Seaweed) Update
Gulf Coast Outlook
Sargassum remains limited across most Florida Gulf Coast beaches. While isolated patches may appear because of changing winds and currents, widespread accumulations are not expected.
East Coast, Caribbean & Florida Keys
Heavier sargassum continues affecting portions of the Caribbean and Atlantic. Travelers heading to the Florida Keys may notice occasional seaweed arrivals depending on local wind patterns, but conditions can vary significantly from day to day.
Health Considerations
Large accumulations of decomposing seaweed can occasionally create unpleasant odors and temporary respiratory irritation for sensitive individuals.
Family Takeaway
For most Florida Gulf Coast beaches, seaweed remains a relatively minor factor when planning today's beach activities.
Water Quality & Bacteria (Vibrio) Update
Water quality remains generally favorable throughout much of Florida's Gulf Coast.
Warm Gulf water temperatures continue supporting naturally occurring Vibrio bacteria, which remain a normal seasonal consideration during August.
Family Takeaway
Swimming, paddleboarding, boating, shelling, and fishing remain appropriate where beaches are open. Continue using normal summer precautions by avoiding Gulf water with open cuts or wounds and rinsing off after swimming.
Tropical Outlook
While Florida itself remains free of any immediate tropical threats, the National Hurricane Center continues monitoring two tropical waves over the eastern and central Atlantic. Current forecast guidance indicates that neither system poses a threat to Florida this week, though RTG will continue watching both as they move westward across the Atlantic.
One of the advantages of following RTG each morning is understanding the difference between "a tropical system exists" and "a tropical system could affect my vacation." Today, those are two very different answers.
Vacation Impact by RTG Region
🟢 Region 1 — Panhandle / Emerald Coast
Pensacola Beach, 30A, Destin, and Panama City Beach continue enjoying favorable beach conditions. Morning hours should offer the best beach experience before afternoon thunderstorms become more common.
🟢 Region 2 — Clearwater & St. Pete
Warm Gulf waters and favorable beach conditions continue with only scattered afternoon thunderstorms expected.
🟢 Region 3 — Anna Maria Island
Anna Maria Island, Holmes Beach, Bradenton Beach, and Coquina Beach continue experiencing excellent summer beach conditions.
🟢 Region 4 — Sarasota Barrier Islands
Longboat Key, Lido Key, and Siesta Key continue offering some of Florida's strongest overall beach conditions. The isolated offshore Sarasota County red tide sample continues without noticeable beach impacts.
🟢 Region 5 — Southwest Florida
Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, Naples, and Marco Island continue experiencing favorable vacation conditions with no widespread environmental concerns.
🌴 RTG Vacation Watch
Florida Keys & Key West
Key West continues experiencing generally favorable vacation conditions.
Although red tide rarely becomes a significant issue in the Keys, RTG continues monitoring:
Tropical weather
Sargassum activity
Water quality
Marine conditions
Coastal flooding
Other vacation-impacting events
Current Status: 🟢 Favorable
What May Change Next
Localized beach conditions can change due to:
• wind direction
• afternoon thunderstorms
• nearshore currents
• localized water quality advisories
Today RTG is monitoring:
Florida's daily red tide sampling
Water quality advisories
Sargassum movement
Rip current forecasts
The two Atlantic tropical waves
Any new tropical development across the Atlantic Basin
What This Means for Families
One of the biggest benefits of checking the Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ each morning is that it separates background information from vacation-changing information.
Today is a perfect example.
There are tropical waves in the Atlantic. There is a background offshore red tide sample near Sarasota County. There are typical afternoon thunderstorms in the forecast.
Yet when those pieces are evaluated together, the overall picture remains very positive for families planning a Florida Gulf Coast beach vacation.
That is exactly what RTG is designed to do—help travelers understand what matters, what doesn't, and where they can enjoy the best beach experience today.
Best Beaches Right Now
🥇 Longboat Key — Outstanding beach comfort, calm Gulf waters, and one of Florida's most consistently enjoyable beach experiences.

Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ August 9, 2026
Today's Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ provides the latest Florida red tide conditions, seaweed outlook, water quality updates, tropical weather, and vacation planning guidance as another August weekend concludes with favorable conditions across Florida's Gulf Coast.
Sunday, August 9, 2026 · 9:00 AM ET
Gulf Coastal Conditions Overview
Florida's Gulf Coast wraps up the weekend with another day of generally favorable beach conditions from Pensacola Beach to Marco Island. Warm Gulf waters, light morning winds, and the typical chance of scattered afternoon thunderstorms continue to define the weather pattern across the region.
For families spending their final vacation day at the beach, morning through early afternoon should once again provide the most comfortable conditions before thunderstorms become more likely later in the day.
Overall, the Gulf Coast continues to enjoy one of the most stable stretches of beach conditions this summer.
Red Tide Update
Gulf Coast
Florida's latest statewide monitoring continues to indicate excellent overall red tide conditions.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission:
Background concentrations of Karenia brevis remain limited to one offshore sample from Sarasota County.
No red tide was detected in Northwest Florida.
No red tide-related fish kills have been reported.
No respiratory irritation associated with red tide has been reported anywhere along Florida's Gulf Coast.
Popular destinations including:
Pensacola Beach
Destin
Clearwater Beach
Anna Maria Island
Longboat Key
Lido Key
Siesta Key
Sanibel Island
Captiva Island
Naples
Marco Island
continue experiencing favorable environmental conditions.
East Coast
No Karenia brevis was detected along Florida's Atlantic Coast during the latest statewide monitoring period.
Family Takeaway
Current monitoring continues to indicate that red tide is having little to no impact on Florida Gulf Coast beach vacations. The only reported sample remains an offshore background-level observation that is not expected to affect beachgoers.
Sargassum (Seaweed) Update
Gulf Coast Outlook
Sargassum remains limited across most Florida Gulf Coast beaches. While isolated patches may occasionally wash ashore due to changing winds and currents, widespread accumulations are not expected.
East Coast & Caribbean Outlook
Heavier sargassum concentrations continue affecting portions of the Caribbean and Atlantic coastline, where beach impacts remain noticeably greater than along Florida's Gulf Coast.
Health Considerations
Large accumulations of decomposing seaweed can occasionally produce unpleasant odors and temporary respiratory irritation for sensitive individuals.
Family Takeaway
Seaweed continues to play only a minor role in vacation planning for most Florida Gulf Coast destinations.
Water Quality & Bacteria (Vibrio) Update
Water quality remains generally favorable throughout much of Florida's Gulf Coast.
Warm Gulf water temperatures continue supporting naturally occurring Vibrio bacteria, which remain a normal seasonal consideration during August.
Family Takeaway
Swimming, boating, paddleboarding, shelling, and fishing remain appropriate where beaches are open. As always, avoid entering Gulf waters with open cuts or wounds and rinse off after swimming.
Tropical Outlook
Although Florida's Gulf Coast remains free of any immediate tropical threats, the National Hurricane Center has begun monitoring a tropical wave over the far eastern Atlantic near the Cabo Verde Islands. Current development chances remain low, and the system is not expected to affect Florida during the coming week.
This serves as a reminder that while NOAA recently lowered its seasonal hurricane outlook because of strengthening El Niño conditions, August and September remain the most active months of hurricane season. RTG will continue monitoring every tropical disturbance as it develops and explain whether it has any realistic impact on Florida Gulf Coast vacations.
Vacation Impact by RTG Region
🟢 Region 1 — Florida Panhandle
Generally favorable beach conditions continue. Continue checking local beach flag warnings before entering the Gulf.
🟢 Region 2 — Clearwater & St. Pete
Warm Gulf waters and favorable beach conditions continue. Afternoon thunderstorms remain the primary weather consideration.
🟢 Region 3 — Anna Maria Island
Excellent beach conditions continue with calm morning waters and favorable swimming opportunities.
🟢 Region 4 — Sarasota Barrier Islands
Longboat Key, Lido Key, and Siesta Key continue offering some of Florida's strongest overall beach conditions. The isolated offshore Sarasota County red tide sample continues without noticeable beach impacts.
🟢 Region 5 — Southwest Florida
Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, Naples, and Marco Island continue experiencing favorable vacation conditions with no widespread environmental concerns.
Family Takeaway
All five RTG regions remain in excellent shape today. While RTG has begun watching a tropical wave far out in the Atlantic, there is no expected impact on Florida vacation plans at this time.
What May Change Next
Localized beach conditions can change due to:
• wind direction
• afternoon thunderstorms
• nearshore currents
• localized water quality advisories
Today RTG is monitoring:
Florida's daily red tide sampling
Water quality advisories
Sargassum movement
Rip current forecasts
The newly identified tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic
Any additional tropical development across the Atlantic Basin
As we move deeper into August, tropical monitoring becomes increasingly important. Most disturbances never affect Florida, but RTG will continue separating the systems that matter from those that don't.
What This Means for Families
Today's Outlook highlights one of the biggest advantages of following RTG every morning.
You don't have to wonder whether every tropical headline should change your vacation plans.
Today is a perfect example. While forecasters have begun tracking a new tropical wave thousands of miles from Florida, it poses no immediate concern for Florida Gulf Coast travelers. At the same time, red tide remains minimal, seaweed impacts are limited, and beach conditions continue to favor enjoyable family vacations.
That's the purpose of the Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™—turning complex environmental information into clear vacation guidance.

Another August weekend begins with generally favorable beach conditions across much of Florida's Gulf Coast. From Pensacola Beach through Marco Island, warm Gulf waters, light morning winds, and the familiar chance of scattered afternoon thunderstorms continue to define the forecast.
For families planning a full beach day, the most comfortable conditions are expected from early morning through early afternoon before typical summertime thunderstorms become more widespread.
Overall, this continues to be one of the more favorable stretches of beach weather this summer.
Red Tide Update
Gulf Coast
Florida's latest statewide monitoring continues to indicate excellent overall red tide conditions.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission:
Background concentrations of Karenia brevis remain limited to one offshore sample from Sarasota County.
No red tide was detected in Northwest Florida.
No red tide-related fish kills have been reported.
No respiratory irritation associated with red tide has been reported anywhere along Florida's Gulf Coast.
Popular destinations including:
Pensacola Beach
Destin
Clearwater Beach
Anna Maria Island
Longboat Key
Lido Key
Siesta Key
Sanibel Island
Captiva Island
Naples
Marco Island
continue experiencing favorable environmental conditions.
East Coast
No Karenia brevis was detected along Florida's Atlantic Coast during the latest statewide monitoring period.
Family Takeaway
Current monitoring indicates that red tide is having little to no impact on Florida Gulf Coast beach vacations. The lone offshore Sarasota County sample remains at background levels, where no beach impacts are anticipated.
Sargassum (Seaweed) Update
Gulf Coast Outlook
Sargassum remains limited across most Florida Gulf Coast beaches. While small patches may occasionally wash ashore because of local winds and currents, widespread accumulations are not expected this weekend.
East Coast & Caribbean Outlook
Heavier sargassum concentrations continue affecting portions of the Caribbean and Atlantic coastline, where beach impacts remain greater than those currently observed along Florida's Gulf Coast.
Health Considerations
Large accumulations of decomposing seaweed can occasionally produce unpleasant odors and temporary respiratory irritation for sensitive individuals.
Family Takeaway
Seaweed remains a relatively minor factor for families visiting Florida Gulf Coast beaches this weekend.
Water Quality & Bacteria (Vibrio) Update
Water quality remains generally favorable throughout much of Florida's Gulf Coast.
Warm Gulf water temperatures continue supporting naturally occurring Vibrio bacteria, which remain a normal seasonal consideration during August.
Family Takeaway
Swimming, boating, paddleboarding, fishing, and shelling remain appropriate where beaches are open. Continue following normal summer precautions by avoiding Gulf water with open cuts or wounds and rinsing off after swimming.
Tropical Outlook
One of this week's biggest stories continues to be the remarkably quiet Atlantic Basin.
NOAA recently updated its seasonal outlook and now expects a 75% chance of a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season, largely because strengthening El Niño conditions are creating wind shear that suppresses tropical development. While August and September remain the climatological peak of hurricane season, no tropical systems are currently expected to directly affect Florida's Gulf Coast in the near future. Even so, RTG will continue monitoring conditions daily because tropical weather can develop quickly this time of year.
Vacation Impact by RTG Region
🟢 Region 1 — Florida Panhandle
Generally favorable beach conditions continue. Continue checking local beach flag warnings before entering the Gulf, especially if afternoon winds increase.
🟢 Region 2 — Clearwater & St. Pete
Warm Gulf waters and favorable beach conditions continue. Afternoon thunderstorms remain the primary weather consideration.
🟢 Region 3 — Anna Maria Island
Excellent beach conditions continue with calm morning waters and favorable swimming opportunities.
🟢 Region 4 — Sarasota Barrier Islands
Longboat Key, Lido Key, and Siesta Key continue offering some of Florida's strongest overall beach conditions. The isolated offshore Sarasota County red tide sample continues without noticeable beach impacts.
🟢 Region 5 — Southwest Florida
Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, Naples, and Marco Island continue experiencing favorable vacation conditions with no widespread environmental concerns.
Family Takeaway
All five RTG regions begin the weekend with favorable vacation conditions. The biggest factor affecting today's beach plans is expected to be the typical afternoon thunderstorm pattern rather than environmental conditions.
What May Change Next
Localized beach conditions can change due to:
• wind direction
• afternoon thunderstorms
• nearshore currents
• localized water quality advisories
Today RTG is monitoring:
Florida's daily red tide sampling
Water quality advisories
Sargassum movement
Rip current forecasts
Tropical development across the Atlantic Basin
While tropical activity remains unusually quiet today, RTG will continue monitoring conditions every morning because August can change quickly as hurricane season progresses.
What This Means for Families
One of the biggest takeaways from the past several weeks is that Florida's Gulf Coast has enjoyed a remarkably consistent stretch of favorable vacation conditions.
Red tide has remained minimal, seaweed impacts have been limited, and tropical activity has stayed unusually quiet for early August. That gives families something every vacation planner appreciates: confidence.

Gulf Coastal Conditions Overview
Florida's Gulf Coast heads into another summer weekend with generally favorable beach conditions from Pensacola Beach to Marco Island. Morning hours continue offering the best opportunities for swimming, shelling, paddleboarding, and relaxing on the beach before scattered afternoon thunderstorms become more common.
For much of the Gulf Coast, environmental conditions remain supportive of beach vacations, allowing families to spend more time deciding which beach to visit rather than worrying about widespread coastal issues.
Red Tide Update

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission:
Background concentrations of Karenia brevis remain limited to one offshore sample from Sarasota County.

No respiratory irritation associated with red tide has been reported along Florida's Gulf Coast.
Popular destinations including:
Pensacola Beach

continue experiencing favorable environmental conditions.
East Coast
No Karenia brevis was observed along Florida's Atlantic Coast during the latest statewide monitoring period.
Family Takeaway
Red tide continues to have little to no impact on Florida Gulf Coast beach vacations. Current monitoring does not indicate widespread conditions that would affect travel plans.
Sargassum (Seaweed) Update
Gulf Coast Outlook
Sargassum remains limited across most Florida Gulf Coast beaches. Small patches may occasionally wash ashore because of changing winds and currents, but widespread accumulations are not expected.
East Coast & Caribbean Outlook
Higher concentrations of sargassum continue affecting portions of the Caribbean and Atlantic coastline, where beach impacts remain noticeably greater than along Florida's Gulf Coast.
Health Considerations
Large accumulations of decomposing seaweed can occasionally produce unpleasant odors and temporary respiratory irritation for sensitive individuals.
Family Takeaway
Seaweed remains a relatively minor consideration for families vacationing along Florida's Gulf Coast this weekend.
Water Quality & Bacteria (Vibrio) Update
Water quality remains generally favorable throughout much of Florida's Gulf Coast.
Warm Gulf water temperatures continue supporting naturally occurring Vibrio bacteria, which remain a normal seasonal consideration during August.
Family Takeaway
Swimming, boating, paddleboarding, shelling, and fishing remain appropriate where beaches are open. Continue following normal summer precautions by avoiding Gulf water with open cuts or wounds and rinsing off after swimming.
Tropical Outlook
One of the biggest stories this week continues to be the lack of tropical activity.
NOAA recently lowered its Atlantic hurricane season outlook, citing strengthening El Niño conditions that are helping suppress tropical development. While August and September remain the climatological peak of hurricane season, there are no tropical systems expected to directly impact Florida's Gulf Coast in the near future. Forecasters continue to emphasize that quiet periods can change, but current conditions are favorable for beach travel.
Vacation Impact by RTG Region

🟢 Region 5 — Southwest Florida

Family Takeaway
Every RTG region begins the weekend with generally favorable beach conditions. Today's biggest planning consideration remains the timing of afternoon thunderstorms rather than environmental conditions.
What May Change Next
Localized beach conditions can change due to:
• wind direction
• afternoon thunderstorms
• nearshore currents
• localized water quality advisories
Today RTG is monitoring:
Florida's next statewide red tide update
Water quality advisories
Sargassum movement
Rip current forecasts
Tropical development across the Atlantic Basin
Although the Atlantic remains unusually quiet today, RTG will continue monitoring daily because conditions can change quickly during hurricane season.
What This Means for Families
This week has been an excellent example of why checking current conditions matters.
Many travelers assume August automatically means active hurricanes or widespread environmental concerns. Instead, Florida's Gulf Coast is entering another weekend with minimal red tide activity, limited seaweed, favorable water quality, and no tropical threats on the immediate horizon.
That gives families the opportunity to focus on something much more enjoyable:

What This Means for Families
Today's Outlook is a good reminder that hurricane season doesn't automatically mean poor beach conditions.
Despite being in early August, Florida's Gulf Coast continues benefiting from minimal red tide activity, limited seaweed, favorable water quality, and the absence of tropical threats. That's excellent news for families planning vacations over the next several days.
Instead of asking whether conditions are safe somewhere along Florida's coastline, today's question is much simpler:
Which beach offers the vacation experience your family is looking for?

Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ July 22, 2026
Today's Florida Gulf Coast Beach Vacation Outlook™ includes the latest Florida red tide conditions, seaweed outlook, water quality updates, and the latest impacts from Tropical Storm Bertha across Florida's Gulf Coast.
Wednesday, July 22, 2026 · 9:00 AM ET
Gulf Coastal Conditions Overview
Conditions remain favorable across much of Florida's Gulf Coast, but today's Outlook reflects a clear difference between the Florida Panhandle and Central/Southwest Florida.
While beaches from Clearwater Beach south through Marco Island continue experiencing generally favorable vacation conditions, portions of the Florida Panhandle are dealing with rough surf, dangerous rip currents, and temporary beach closures as Tropical Storm Bertha moves west along the northern Gulf Coast.
This is exactly why RTG monitors conditions across five regions—conditions can vary significantly from one part of Florida's Gulf Coast to another.
Red Tide Update
Gulf Coast
Florida's latest statewide monitoring continues to indicate low overall red tide activity across most monitored Gulf Coast beaches. No widespread bloom activity is affecting Florida's major vacation destinations, and respiratory irritation remains limited across the Gulf Coast. Red tide is not the primary concern for travelers today.
Popular destinations including:
Destin*
Clearwater Beach
Anna Maria Island
Longboat Key
Lido Key
Siesta Key
Sanibel Island
Captiva Island
Naples
Marco Island
continue reporting generally favorable environmental conditions.
*Beach access in portions of the Florida Panhandle may still be restricted because of hazardous surf associated with Tropical Storm Bertha—not because of red tide.
East Coast
No significant red tide impacts are currently affecting Florida's Atlantic Coast.
Family Takeaway
For most Florida Gulf Coast travelers, red tide is not expected to significantly impact vacation plans this week.
Sargassum (Seaweed) Update
Gulf Coast Outlook
Sargassum remains limited across most Florida Gulf Coast beaches. Localized patches remain possible depending on wind direction and nearshore currents, but widespread accumulations are not expected.
East Coast & Caribbean Outlook
Elevated sargassum continues across portions of the Atlantic and Caribbean, where several destinations continue experiencing larger seaweed accumulations than Florida's Gulf Coast.
Health Considerations
Large accumulations of decomposing sargassum can occasionally release hydrogen sulfide gas, which may cause temporary respiratory irritation, headaches, eye irritation, or discomfort for sensitive individuals.
Family Takeaway
Florida Gulf Coast beaches continue providing a cleaner beach experience than many Atlantic-facing destinations.
Water Quality & Bacteria (Vibrio) Update
Water quality conditions remain generally favorable throughout much of Florida's Gulf Coast.
Warm Gulf water temperatures continue supporting naturally occurring Vibrio bacteria, which remain a normal seasonal consideration during July.
Family Takeaway
Swimming, paddleboarding, boating, shelling, and fishing remain appropriate for most visitors where beaches remain open. Continue following normal summer water safety practices and avoid entering coastal waters with open cuts or wounds.
Tropical Outlook
Tropical Storm Bertha continues moving west along the northern Gulf Coast today. The storm is expected to bring periods of heavy rain, gusty winds, dangerous surf, and localized coastal flooding from the Florida Panhandle westward into Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
Vacation Impact by RTG Region
🟡 Region 1 — Florida Panhandle
Current Impact
Double red flags have been posted at many Panhandle beaches.
Gulf waters are closed to swimmers in numerous locations because of life-threatening rip currents and rough surf.
Expect dangerous beach conditions, even where the weather may temporarily appear calm.
🟢 Regions 2–5
Clearwater & St. Pete
Anna Maria Island
Sarasota Barrier Islands
Southwest Florida
These regions are not currently experiencing the same widespread tropical impacts. Afternoon thunderstorms remain the primary weather concern, but beach conditions remain generally favorable for vacationers.
Family Takeaway
This is a great example of why destination-specific monitoring matters.
Families vacationing in the Florida Panhandle should expect hazardous surf and possible beach closures today.
Families traveling to Clearwater Beach, Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Lido Key, Siesta Key, Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, Naples, and Marco Island can generally continue vacation plans with much fewer tropical concerns.
What May Change Next
Localized beach conditions can change due to:
• wind direction
• rainfall patterns
• nearshore currents
• tropical moisture moving through the Gulf
Today RTG is closely monitoring:
Tropical Storm Bertha's westward movement
Beach closure updates
Rip current conditions
Florida red tide sampling
Water quality advisories
Sargassum movement
As Bertha moves away from Florida, beach conditions across the Panhandle should gradually improve later this week.
What This Means for Families
One of RTG's biggest advantages is helping travelers understand that Florida Gulf Coast conditions are rarely the same everywhere at once.
Today is a perfect example.
If your family is vacationing in the Florida Panhandle, expect hazardous surf, dangerous rip currents, and possible beach closures.
If you're visiting Clearwater Beach, Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, Naples, or Marco Island, your vacation outlook remains considerably more favorable.
Knowing those regional differences before you travel can make all the difference.
