Gulf Coastal Conditions Overview

Conditions remain favorable across much of Florida's Gulf Coast, but today's Outlook reflects a clear difference between the Florida Panhandle and Central/Southwest Florida.

While beaches from Clearwater Beach south through Marco Island continue experiencing generally favorable vacation conditions, portions of the Florida Panhandle are dealing with rough surf, dangerous rip currents, and temporary beach closures as Tropical Storm Bertha moves west along the northern Gulf Coast.

Florida's latest statewide monitoring continues to indicate low overall red tide activity across most monitored Gulf Coast beaches. Sargassum (Seaweed) Update

Gulf Coast Outlook

Elevated sargassum continues across portions of the Atlantic and Caribbean, where several destinations continue experiencing larger seaweed accumulations than Florida's Gulf Coast.

Large accumulations of decomposing sargassum can occasionally release hydrogen sulfide gas, which may cause temporary respiratory irritation, headaches, eye irritation, or discomfort for sensitive individuals.

Water Quality & Bacteria (Vibrio) Update

Water quality conditions remain generally favorable throughout much of Florida's Gulf Coast.

Tropical Outlook

Tropical Storm Bertha continues moving west along the northern Gulf Coast today. The storm is expected to bring periods of heavy rain, gusty winds, dangerous surf, and localized coastal flooding from the Florida Panhandle westward into Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
